Privacy notice
How this website handles information about the people who visit it.
The African Heterodox Economics Network ("AHEN") operates africanheterodox.org. This notice describes what the site collects, why, and what you can ask us to do about it. It is written to meet AHEN's obligations under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and, for visitors in the United Kingdom and the European Union, the UK GDPR and EU GDPR.
What the site collects
Server logs
Our hosting provider records each request to the site: the date and time, the page or file requested, the referring page, your browser type, and your IP address. These logs are generated automatically by the web server and are retained by the host. They are used to keep the site running and to produce aggregate visitor counts.
Paper downloads
When a working paper or policy brief is downloaded, we record the date and time, which paper, the referring page, the browser type, and a truncated IP address — the final portion is discarded before storage, so the record indicates a network and approximate region but not an individual connection. We use this to know which research is being read and from where.
Mailing list
If you sign up for publication notices, we store the email address you give us, together with any name and institution you choose to add, and the date of your consent. We use it only to tell you about AHEN publications and events. We do not sell it, and we do not share it with third parties. You may ask to be removed at any time by writing to the address below, and we will do so.
Analytics
If you agree when asked, we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read. IP anonymisation is enabled and advertising features are switched off. If you decline, or if your browser sends a "Do Not Track" signal, no analytics are loaded at all. This choice is remembered in your own browser and you can change it by clearing your site data.
What we do not do
We do not attempt to identify individual visitors, and we cannot: anonymous web traffic does not carry a person's identity. We do not build profiles of readers, we do not use advertising or cross-site tracking, and we place no cookies of our own beyond the record of your analytics choice.
Your rights
You may ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or withdraw a consent you previously gave. Write to info@africanheterodox.org and we will respond. Under POPIA you may also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa; visitors in the UK or EU may complain to their own supervisory authority.
